Promoting Eco-friendly Living Environments

The event started out with a call from fellow CUHK alumni Jessica Zhuang to Tommy Chung to inquire if we can cohost an event with her partner company, the 21st Century Business Herald. This would focus on a team that deals with monitoring climate change internationally and how promoting environmentally friendly living could provide benefits for easing climate change. More details are available at newsletter.

Climate Change from a Hong Kong Perspective

The CSR team was proud to have Professor LAU,Ngar-Cheung Gabriel as its speaker at the joint event with 21st Century China Business Herald. Professor Lau has over three decades of scientific research experience in climate change and is currently the Director of the Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability at CUHK. During his presentation,he spoke about the latest trends in climate change based on findings by the IPCC, a United Nations funded and globally recognized authority on climate change that publishes a report every 5-6 years.

Promoting Environment Protection

The 3 speakers in the panel discussion were from key NGO organizations and one from the entertainment industry. Li Xue first shared how having the so-called “Star Power” can help influence people to be more aware of the environment. Her older sister, Chinese megastar Li BingBing doesn’t wait to get approached by people but to take the initiative to start philanthropic activities and started her own studio and ensured that the studio did sustainable activities. Li BingBing is also the Asian representative for Gucci and discussed with Gucci on how to conduct environmentally friendly activities. Another very good example is how Yao Ming has helped lower the amount of Shark Fin soup being consumed in China. With his stature in Chinese culture, it was very promising to see him being able to shift the Chinese mindset to stop consuming a premier cuisine.

Panel Discussion

Organizing a panel discussion has been an on-going trend in events like the one CUHK MBA CSR Committee had. The discussion opens up room for a wide range of information from across different fields and let them think about how each of them can work with each other. The CUHK MBA CSR Committee is planning to use this kind of discussion in the main event next year in May 2014 which would allow different speakers to throw ideas and see how each of them can benefit from each other. This also opened a connection with the NGOs and with Li Xue who are potential sponsors and speakers for our main event in May 2014.
